Five Identifications of Research Methods - 809 Words

There are many different ways of studying the exact same behavior. The five identifications of research methods are naturalistic observation, survey method, case study, correlational design, and the experimental method. Each other research methods listed were used in an extensive amount of studies. Naturalistic observation is a research method usually used by psychologists and other social scientists. This technique involves observing subjects in their natural environment. This type of research is often used in situations where conducting lab research is unlikely, cost excessively or would overly affect the subjects behavior. Standardization is also important so that the results can be generalized to the larger population. Surveys must also use careful wording in the questions to prevent confusion or bias. Conducting a survey requires a representative sample, meaning they are who provide the most valid results because they reflect the characteristics of the population from where they were selected. Examples of survey method would be survey of recent retired citizens on their major concerns about life without work, or a survey of first-time pregnant women on their beliefs about. There are different types of case studies such as explanatory which is used to do causal investigations.
